What are your thoughts on standardised spelling tests (South Australian Spelling Test or ACER Spelling Test)? If you follow a phonics scope and sequence many of the words in these tests contain GPCs that haven’t been taught.

This is like teaching with apples but assessing with oranges.
The positives of the South Australian Spelling Test, are that it assesses the four areas of spelling (phonological, visual, morphemic, etymological). It's a good test but why give it if students haven't learned all of the Grapheme-Phoneme Correspondences (GPCs)? Make sure you are testing what you have taught.
