When doing retrieval practice in phonics lessons, can you retrieve any prior learning, or should there be a sequence?

We should do retrieval practice to prevent forgetting, as forgetting happens quite rapidly. The idea is to bring something that has been mastered back into working memory/ This can be done through retrieval questions, a quiz, a true or false activity for example.
