What are your thoughts on the K-2 Draft Syllabus?

We are excited to now be looking at a syllabus document that follows the Science of Reading. It is underpinned by the Gough and Tunmer Simple View of Reading model, Scarborough’s Reading Rope. Each of the five areas of reading have their own heading, their own page, so now we don’t need to go hunting for them.

The positives are:

  • Phonological awareness, phonics, fluency and vocabulary are recognised as crucial areas of reading. Each with a dedicated heading, outcome and content descriptors.
  • The outcomes and content descriptors are clearly written, and can be likened to Learning Intentions/Success Criteria.
  • There are clear links to the Literacy Progressions and
  • Correct phonics terminology is used.

Teachers will need subject knowledge. Teachers will need training the methodology and pedagogy of effective phonics instruction. This will be the key to the syllabus document being implemented successfully.
