What is the best way to structure home reading?

The best way to start is to think about the purpose of home reading. Remember parents aren’t and shouldn’t be teachers. We don’t want them misleading the instruction. Their role is to support and encourage the engagement with reading.

Home readers/Home reading must follow the classroom teaching, which uses the Simple View of Reading model.

Texts that you send home can support:

  • Read To – Parent reads to the child (Library books, picture books, informative texts) These texts will help to build language comprehension.
  • Read With – Parent supports the child with the reading (maybe levelled texts)
  • Read By – students requires minimal to no support to read (decodable texts matched to level of ability and scope and sequence) These texts will help to build word recognition. At the kindergarten/prep/foundation level, you might start with single words, not full texts.

You could also use activities from the Get Reading Right Take Away books.
