What are GPCs and what does GPC mean?

GPCs is the acronym used in relation to phonics. Phonics refers the relationship between speech sounds (phonemes) and their letter representations (graphemes). Therefore the term GPCs stands for grapheme-phoneme correspondences.

Understanding how graphemes match to phonemes is essential in teaching phonics, and for students learning to blend or decode words correctly. GPCs need to be taught in a explicit and systematic manner, which is where a phonics scope and sequence is essential. Students need to learn grapheme-phoneme correspondences to automaticity through repeated teaching and practice.

It is important to note that synthetic phonics is a sound to symbol method. Children must be taught that letters represent the sounds of spoken language and not that the letters of the alphabet each have a sound. (Nevills and Wolfe)
